Duthoit\/Dufresne (2014) \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\treport on the eviction of an informal Rroma settlement in Lille. The camp accommodated \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tabout 30 people, who lived in sixteen caravans. The site was evicted at the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\trequest of the owner of the property, the Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Publique Locale. A \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcomprehensive social diagnosis, which would have ensured the future \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\taccommodation of the families, was not applied: \u201cA new evacuation of a Roma camp took place this Tuesday. The police \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\toperation began at 7:30 on the Rue de la chaude-Rivi\u00e8re, between Fives and the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcasino, and lasted three hours. The Roma were installed under the bridge of a bypass. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAs with any eviction of this type, the same scenes with families in extreme \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tpoverty were repeated; they find themselves on the street. In total, thirty \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tpeople were evicted. \u201cI do not know where we will go, moaned a family man. My \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfive children are enrolled in school in Lille, what shall they do?\u201d Regarding \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe sixteen caravans, which served as<\/em> accommodation:<\/em> \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe majority was in poor condition and were \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tpulled onto the road by tow trucks.\u201d<\/em> \u2013 It must be emphasized that the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tevictions of the informal settlements massively complicate the long-term \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tintegration of the Rroma immigrants. Due to the expulsions, the existing problems \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tand the integration question are simply moved from one location to the next, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tbut not resolved. Particularly affected are children attending school, who are disturbed \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tby the expulsions in their school curiculum and therefore in their future \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcareers. Furthermore, with the media focus on the informal settlements, one \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcreates impression that there are only lower class Rroma who are poorly \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\teducated. According to estimates of the Rroma Foundation, 100,000 to 500,000 \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRroma live integrated and unobtrusively in the French society. They are \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcompletely ignored by the French public. The Rroma living in informal settlements, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twho recently immigrated from Eastern Europe \u2013 about 15,000 to 20’0000 people \u2013 only \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tconstitute a minority of all Rroma resident in France (compare Libert 2014, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tNord Eclair 2014).<\/p>\n
