Lib\u00e9ration (2014) \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\treports on a recent decision of the Paris prosecutor. The investigation covers \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tstatements by Prime Minister Manuel Valls, in which he claimed that Rroma had the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tinclination to stay in Romania or to return there, and they had a very \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdifferent lifestyle than the French, which was inevitably in confrontation with \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe French one. The Paris prosecutor\u2019s office now judged on December the second \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthat the criminal court was not competent to judge the statements made by \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tManuel Valls. The criminal chamber will pronounce its verdict in this regard on \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tDecember the 19th. However, the plaintiff against Valls, the organisation \u201cLa \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tVoix des Roms\u201d, wants that his statements are not judged independently of his \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfunction as the then Interior Minister, but are recognised as demagoguery: \u201cFor the lawyer of Manuel Valls, Mr. Georges \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tHolleaux, the statements of his client are adjacent to \u201chis ministerial \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcompetence\u201d. In his view, the facts thus reverse the Court of Justice of the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRepublic (CJR), the only institution empowered to judge members of the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tgovernment, for deeds which they have committed in the function of their \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\toffice. Moreover, he pointed out that that Mrap (Mouvement contre le racisme et \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tpour l’amiti\u00e9 entre les peuples) had filed a lawsuit against Manuel Valls at \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe the Court of Justice of the Republic in September 2013, which was dropped \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tit without further consequences.\u201d <\/em>Manuel Valls is not an isolated case with \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\this racist remarks against the Rroma. In recent years, numerous French mayors \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tand politicians have gained public attention with racist remarks about Rroma. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSome were sentenced to mild fines, others were completely acquitted, referring to \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe freedom of expression. In the French public, Rroma are equated with 15,000 \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tto 20,000 Rroma who live in illegal settlements. The 100,000 to 500,000 Rroma who \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tare integrated in France since generations, are continuously ignored. The Rroma \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tare also repeatedly exploited by various parties for political purposes and \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tblamed for social ills that have their origins in society as a whole, and not \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tin a single minority. Unfortunately, this scapegoat policy finds approval among \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ta shocking number of people (compare L’Yonne R\u00e9publicaine 2014).<\/p>\n
