A racist pogrom against Rroma  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ttook place at the end of October, culminating in the attack of a house inhabited  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tby Rroma. The protesters accused the Rroma of burglaries and thefts. The residents  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcould be brought to safety thanks to the police\u2019s intervention. In response to  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe pogrom, a rally against xenophobia took place in early November. A Rroma  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfamily from Dublin, who had kept their identity a secret until now also took  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tpart: <em>\u201eRoma woman Jennifer Ciuciu (20)  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tconcealed her true identity for three years for fear of persecution when she  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tmoved from Romania to Ireland with her family. [&#8230;] So Jennifer and her four  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tsiblings said they were \u201cRomanian instead of Roma gypsies.\u201d And in the  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\taftermath of the recent \u201canti-Roma protests\u201d in Waterford, they have no regrets  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tabout denying their roots. \u201cSome people are so racist. If had to go back I  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twould hide it again because I wouldn&#8217;t like what happened here to happen to  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tme\u201d, she said standing in the middle of John Robert&#8217;s Square at last week&#8217;s  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWaterford Against Racism protest.\u201d<\/em> Chief superintendent Pat  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMurphy condemned the anti-Rroma pogrom as racist scapegoat politics by people  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twho are not interested in public safety. In the UK, there are an estimated  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t90,000 to 120,000 Rroma according to assessments of the Rroma Foundation. The  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tmajority of them are integrated and have a job. Rroma are not more criminal  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthan other ethnic groups, but are particularly affected by discrimination and  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\texclusion. In recent months and years, right-wing populist parties and the  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tmedia have fuelled fears of a mass immigration of Eastern European Rroma, which  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tallegedly would abuse the British welfare system and do not want to integrate.  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSuch prejudices and misinformation also spread because of uncritical media  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcoverage. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>McCormack, Claire (2014) &#8216;We were hiding the  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ttruth that we were Roma because we were afraid&#8217;.
