Several British \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tnewspapers report on violence at the Hinde House School in Sheffield. Various students \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twere victims of severe physical attacks in the last few weeks and months, for \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twhich Rroma youth from Slovakia are made responsible. While the school \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tmanagement states to get the situation under control, a group of parents calls \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfor harder sanctions against the school violence. The school administration is \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdeemed to show too much tolerance towards the \u201cgang-like culture\u201d of the Rroma \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcommunity. In the case described here, problems that also exist at other \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tschools are made in\u200b\u200bto ethnic issues. There is no \u201cgang-like culture\u201d of \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tviolence among Rroma. What the newspapers report are the actions of \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tindividuals, who could also belong to any other ethnic group. The cited \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tparents, who accuse the school principal of Hinde House to do nothing against \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe Rroma adolescents for fear of racism accusations, see this differently: \u201cParents have accused an inner-city head \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tteacher of turning a blind eye towards violent gangs of Roma pupils for fear of \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tbeing labelled a racist. More than 1,600 people have signed an online petition \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tclaiming \u2018children have been stabbed, mugged and nearly kicked to death\u2019 at the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tschool. It urges the head not to \u2018be afraid\u2019 to tackle the issue \u2013 and suggests \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\the is failing to do so for fear of appearing racist because the majority of the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tperpetrators are of Slovakian Roma origin. [\u2026] The petition was launched after \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tan attack last Thursday that left pupil Rhys Larkings, 14, battered and bruised \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twith a broken nose after being allegedly punched to the ground by three Roma \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSlovak teenagers.\u201d <\/em>The adolescents responsible for the violence were \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\texcluded of the school as a consequence, and the police have launched an \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tinvestigation against them. The complaint of the parents saying that the school \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tadministration does nothing for fear of racism accusations is therefore unfounded. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRather, the outrage of the parents cited seem to be influenced by the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tnationalism fuelled by UKIP, as one can read in the article\u2019s comments section. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tExcessive ethnic divisions only occur when people are willing to be manipulated \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tby nationalist rhetoric. Rroma are not more violent than other ethnic groups (compare \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBBC News 2014, Daily Express 2014, Lawton 2014, The Star 2014).<\/p>\n
