The Paris appeal\u2019s court \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tsentenced Jean-Marie Le Pen, founder of the right-wing nationalist Front \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tNational, to a fine of 5\u2019000 Euros. The strident politician had claimed at the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSummer University of the Front National that Rroma would steal as naturally as \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tbirds fly. In French, the word \u201cvoler\u201d means to fly as well as to steal. In its \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tjudgment, the court of appeal upheld the first instance verdict of the criminal \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcourt in December 2013. Le Pen\u2019s defence attorney \u2013 Mr. de Saint-Just \u2013 decidedly \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\treferred to the right to freedom of expression. This would clearly be violated \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tby the judgment of the appeal\u2019s court: \u201c\u201cThis \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfinal verdict is a massive violation of freedom of expression\u201d, judged Mr. de \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSaint-Just on Monday, assuring that his client \u201cwill go before the European \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCourt of Human Rights that fights for the freedom of expression and that \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tnormally supercedes the appeal\u2019s court, unless it is Jean-Marie Le Pen.\u201d<\/em> \u201cIt’s not about freedom of expression, it is \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tabout a racist expression, which is a crime\u201d, Mr. Pierre Mairat, the lawyer for \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe movement against racism and for friendship between people (Mrap) stated. \u201cThis \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tlast, politically incorrect expression of Le Pen corresponds to his leaving: that \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tof a man who has always associated his statements with hatred, responded Mr. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tPatrick Klugman, lawyer of SOS Racisme, saluting \u201ca welcome verdict\u201d\u201d <\/em>(Lib\u00e9ration \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t2014). Jean-Marie Le Pen has been repeatedly noticed for his anti-Semitic \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tremarks gainst foreigners, minorities and the trivialisation of the Holocaust (compare \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tLe Huffington Post in 2014, Le Monde in 2014, Le Parisien 2014).<\/p>\n
