{"id":1220,"date":"2014-08-22T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-08-21T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/%20rroma.org\/22-08-2014-integration-of-immigrant-rroma-children-in-german-schools\/"},"modified":"2022-08-04T11:44:52","modified_gmt":"2022-08-04T10:44:52","slug":"22-08-2014-integration-of-immigrant-rroma-children-in-german-schools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rroma.org\/de\/22-08-2014-integration-of-immigrant-rroma-children-in-german-schools\/","title":{"rendered":"22.08.2014 Integration of immigrant Rroma-children in German schools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><em style=\"font-family: Arial;\">Der Westen<\/em> und <em style=\"font-family: Arial;\">Radio Ennepe Ruhr<\/em> report on the integration of children from immigrant \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRroma families in the public schools of Ennepetal in North Rhine-Westphalia. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThis is said to proceed in a largely positive fashion. According to the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tjournalists\u2019 estimates, the families were a part of those families that \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\treceived media attention while living in the \u201cRroma house\u201d in Duisburg and who \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tsubsequently \u00a0moved to Ennepetal. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAround 30 adults and 80 children are now living in the worker housinf of a \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tformer metal factory. While it is stressed that the integration of the families \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\thas enjoyed top priority from the start and will be actively promoted by the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcommunity, one is nevertheless irritated by the fact that the children are not \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tintegrated into regular classes, but are rather taught in so-called \u201cintegration \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tclasses\u201d. Of the 52 Rroma-children who were enrolled into these integration \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tclasses, in which their viability for the regular school is assessed, only six now \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twill go to regular classes with the new school year starting. For those \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tresponsible for integration, this seems to be a success. However, from the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tperspective of a real integration, the segregated teaching of Rroma children is \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\textremely problematic, as they can hardly socialise with other children. Anke \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tVelten-Franke from the mayor\u2019s office sees this differently: since Rrroma \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tchildren are taught in the buildings of the middle and primary school, they were \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\table to make contact with other children during school breaks, she states. It \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tis to be hoped that the politician proves right. Principally, segregated schooling, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tespecially in the context of negative experiences from the Czech Republic or \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRomania, where it is still widespread, should be seen very critically, since it \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfosters and maintains the discrimination and marginalisation of the minority. The \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfocus on the recently immigrated Rroma families should not obscure the fact already \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tnow 110&#8217;00 to 130,000 Rroma are living integrated in Germany, many for \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tgenerations. Their children are not taught segregated. In addition, Stefan \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tScherer commits a gross error in judgment when he reproduces without comment \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthat the social workers of Ennepetal would share a fear with many other \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tresidents: <em style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u201cThe Roma are not sedentary \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tpeople. The fear to invest a lot of money and energy, and then they move to the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tnext town or the next country is still present in Ennepetal\u201d<\/em> (Scherer \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t2014). However, most Rroma are not travellers and never were. The alleged \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twandering lifestyle is rather the result of their continuous expulsion, which \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twas and is reinterpreted in a false analogy to a travelling way of life \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t(compare Radio Ennepe Ruhr 2014). \u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Radio Ennepe Ruhr (2014) Auch f\u00fcr die Roma-Kinder in \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tEnnepetal startet jetzt wieder der Unterricht.
