{"id":1221,"date":"2014-08-22T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-08-22T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/%20rroma.org\/22-08-2014-sicily-turmoil-because-of-a-signpost-against-begging-rroma\/"},"modified":"2022-08-21T07:32:48","modified_gmt":"2022-08-21T06:32:48","slug":"22-08-2014-sicily-turmoil-because-of-a-signpost-against-begging-rroma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rroma.org\/de\/22-08-2014-sicily-turmoil-because-of-a-signpost-against-begging-rroma\/","title":{"rendered":"22.08.2014 Sicily: turmoil because of a signpost against begging Rroma"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Adam Weiss, legal director \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tof the European Roma Rights Centre (ERRC), criticizes in a recent press release \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ta sign in a Sicilian supermarket that openly asks not to give any money to \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u201cGypsy beggars\u201d, because <em style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u201ctheir begging \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tallows them to earn from 60 to 80 euro a day, an amount of money that a \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tspecialised ITALIAN worker doesn&#8217;t earn, considering that the total sum is free \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfrom tax\u201d <\/em>(The Local 2014). For Adam Weiss, the discriminatory sign is an \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\texpression of a broader discrimination of Rroma in Italy and completely \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tunacceptable. The shame level on racist statement is never lowest towards Rroma, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\the states: <em style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u201cDiscrimination against the Roma \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcommunity is getting worse in Italy, with members of the Roma community \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tincreasingly being subjected to gang violence, he [Weiss] said. While there are \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tmore examples of anti-Roma discrimination in Italy than elsewhere, such \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tproblems are being documented by the ERRC across Europe. In Italy last year the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tERRC discovered victims of theft were asked to fill out a police form in which \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthey were able to name \u201cgypsies\u201d as the culprits, without any other options of \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tethnicity. Rights groups successfully campaigned to have the tickbox removed\u201d <\/em>(The \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tLocal 2014). Furthermore, the impression that large amounts can be earned by \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tbegging is wrong as is the belief that the most begging is done by organised \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tgangs. Jean-Pierre Tabin (2013) concluded in his study about begging in \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tLausanne that one averagely earns 15 to 20 francs per day beging in Switzerland, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twhich is only a fraction of the alleged 80 Euros in Sicily.
