In the talk, De Maizi\u00e8re justifies his successful \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tefforts to declare Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Macedonia to be safe \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcountries of origin. He states that although Rroma are badly treated in these \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthree countries, they are not politically persecuted. Therefore, a refugee \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tstatus for Rroma from these countries can no longer be acceptable: <em style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u201cA part of the Greens criticise me, saying I \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tplay people who come to us against each other. But that would mean by \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\timplication that Germany has to accept anyone who comes here. [&#8230;]<\/em> <em style=\"font-family: Arial;\">That is why the distinction between real \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tpolitical persecution and others who leave their homes for other reasons is the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\trational way and the path laid out by our constitution. A bad treatment of the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRoma in some Balkan countries is just no political persecution. This is hard \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfor those affected, but this distinction is necessary.\u201d <\/em>Rroma are indeed \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tnot politically persecuted in Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Macedonia. Their \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tintegration is historically proven for the Balkans: since centuries, they belong \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tto all social strata and professional groups. However, that does not mean that \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthey are not exposed to massive discrimination in everyday life, especially \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tsince the strengthened nationalism of the Yugoslav Wars.
