{"id":1270,"date":"2014-11-28T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-11-28T01:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/%20rroma.org\/28-11-2014-award-for-holocaust-survivors-hugo-hollenreiner\/"},"modified":"2022-08-04T11:50:43","modified_gmt":"2022-08-04T10:50:43","slug":"28-11-2014-award-for-holocaust-survivors-hugo-hollenreiner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rroma.org\/de\/28-11-2014-award-for-holocaust-survivors-hugo-hollenreiner\/","title":{"rendered":"28.11.2014 Award for Holocaust survivors Hugo H\u00f6llenreiner"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Trebbin (2014) reports  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ton the award for the German Rroma-Holocaust survivor Hugo H\u00f6llenreiner.  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tH\u00f6llenreiner is one of three thousand survivors who survived the \u201cgypsy camp\u201d  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tof Auschwitz-Birkenau. Most of the approximately 30,000 prisoners, including  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tmany women and children, were killed. In the 1990s, H\u00f6llenreiner began to break  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\this silence about this traumatic experience and henceforth committed himself as  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ta contemporary witness. He has reported on the Nazi atrocities at  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAuschwitz-Birkenau to thousands of German pupils: <em style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u201cHow SS men launched sheep dogs on naked people before his eyes. How  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthey drove people into the gas chambers. How he had to witness mass shootings  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tand then had to help with filling in the graves with the bodies of the  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tmurdered.<\/em> <em style=\"font-family: Arial;\">And how little Hugo was lying  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ton the operating table of camp doctor Josef Mengele&#8230;<\/em> <em style=\"font-family: Arial;\">[&#8230;] 36 family members of the H\u00f6llenreiners perished in the Holocaust.  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tHugo\u2019s parents and their six children survived with a lot of luck and great  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcourage<\/em>. <em style=\"font-family: Arial;\">However, his education after  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe war and the liberation was short-lived: the teachers put the \u201cGypsy boy\u201d  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tunceremoniously out the door.<\/em> <em style=\"font-family: Arial;\">The  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdiscrimination continued. So Hugo H\u00f6llenreiner had to start his career with  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tpeddling.\u201d<\/em> For his commitment as a contemporary witness to the Holocaust,  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tH\u00f6llenreiner has now been awarded with the medal \u201cMunich shines\u201d. West Germany did  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tnot recognise the genocide of the Rroma until 1982, when many of the survivors had  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\talready died. The Holocaust of the Rroma is often incorrectly referred to with  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe word \u201cPorrajmos\u201d. The term, which traces back to the verb \u201cporravav\u201d,  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tmeaning to \u201copen wide\u201d, is often used in the context of sexual activity and therefore  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tis not appropriate to describe a genocide.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Trebbin, Ulrich (2014)  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tEine Kindheit in Auschwitz.
