Several German local \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tnewspapers report on the meetings of the council for the affairs of German \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSinti and Roma in Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg. After a first meeting, the expert group \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tstated that it wishes a realistic depiction of the Sinti and Roma in Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg\u2019s \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tschools. So far, the students were mainly taught clich\u00e9s but not a critical, realistic \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tpicture of this minority: \u201c[Daniel] \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tStrauss criticised that the stereotypical image of the \u201cGypsy\u201d is still widely \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tused. If Sinti and Roma are at all a topic in lessons, they are often depicted \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tas victims. Although there are many creative people [among them], not all of \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthem out themselves as members of this minority. In addition, the future of the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tgraves of Sinti and Roma who survived National Socialism was a central point of \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe discussion. The council agreed to maintain these graves in the long run. Their \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tnumber in Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg is estimated at about 300\u201d <\/em>(S\u00fcdwest Press 2014\/I, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcompare Die Welt 2014, S\u00fcdwest Presse 2014\/II, SWR 2014). The predominantly pejorative \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tstereotypes that ascribe the Rroma a culturally based delinquency and with \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\thierarchical clans, are a projection on the minority of alleged knowledge that \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\thas prevailed the media and the public as the dominant narrative about the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRroma. However, these stereotypes are largely wrong. Rroma are not more \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcriminal than other ethnic groups, many are well educated, settled and belong \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tto the middle class.<\/p>\n
