In Nanterre and \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAulnay-sous-Bois in the Paris suburbs, more illegal Rroma settlements were \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tevicted following court decisions. The settlement in Nanterre housed 300 to 400 \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tpeople and was located on a wasteland near a highway and a railway line. When \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe security forces started the evacuation, there were still about 150 people \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tpresent on the premises. The prefecture of Nanterre said they had pre-booked \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t123 hotel beds, from which only nine people wanted to make use of. The lawyer of \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe Rroma, Julie Launois-Flaceli\u00e8re, applied to the European Court of Human \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRights and called for the suspension of the evacuation. However, this had no \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\teffect. The city council communicated that maintaining a slum near a highway \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twas not desirable either for the affected families or for the city. In \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAulnay-sous-Bois an informal Rroma camp was also evicted. It encompassed about \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t400 people, including around 100 children, the majority of Romanian origin. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tFran\u00e7ois Siebecke, from a local charity, criticised that months of work for the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tchildren\u2019s schooling and access to medical care had been destroyed by the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\teviction. According to the prefecture of Aulnay-sous-Bois, none of the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdisplaced persons demanded alternative accommodation. In the summer months, the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tnumber of evictions usually rises significantly. On one side, this has to do \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twith seasonal factors, since one usually admits the residents of the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tsettlements a limited right to remain because of cold winters. On the other \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\thand, some judges consider the enrolment of Rroma children in their decisions and \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twait with the evictions until the school year has ended (compare Hubin 2014, Le \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tParisien 2014 Lib\u00e9ration in 2014, RTL France 2014). It has to be emphasized \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthat the governmental evacuations of informal settlements significantly complicate \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ta long-term integration of the Rroma migrants. Although the forced evictions solve \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe short-term problems of the local communities, the actual problems for those \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\taffected still remain. Mostly, after a very short period, new informal camps \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tare established at other locations. Through the media focus on illegal \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tsettlements, the public gets the impression that there are only Rroma belonging \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tto the lower class, who are poorly educated. However, according to assessments \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tof the Rroma Foundation, an estimated 100,000 to 500,000 invisible Rroma live \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tin an integrated and unobtrusive way in France, many since several generations. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThey are totally disregarded in the public debate. Rroma should not to be \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tequated with an underclass. They belong to all social classes.<\/p>\n
