Aaron Lake Smith (2013) \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\treported on the continued segregation of Rroma in Slovakia. The fire in the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCastle of Kr\u00e1sna H\u00f4rka in March 2012, which was attributed to arson by two \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRroma boys, gave rise to an increase in the discrimination of Rroma in \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSlovakia. Nationalist movements and among them for example politician Marian \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tKotleba reasoned that the stereotypes about Rroma are true and unavoidable. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tOpen xenophobia against Rroma in the Hlinka Slovak People’s Party, a party which \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\thas the same name as the fascist regime during World War Two, is not unusual. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRroma are the cause for the discrimination against \u201chonest people\u201d, the ethnic \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSlovaks. Followers of Hlinka support geographical segregation of the Rroma in \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\treservations or even their extermination modelled after the one of the Jews by \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe Nazis. The one billion dollars in development funds that the EU and the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWorld Bank provided for inclusion of Rroma in the workforce, the schools and \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe social community seem to have borne little fruits and have often been \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdiverted to realize local pet projects of municipalities. An interviewed member \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tof parliament sees these funds as an pretext to help prevent the migration of \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe Rroma in the West, where they also are usually undesirable.<\/p>\n
Smith then goes on about \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe history of Rroma in Eastern Europe. Under the Soviet Union rule, they were \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tgenerally well integrated into the workforce, the official policy being at full \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\temployment. After the fall of the Iron Curtain, they were progressively \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\texcluded in segregated suburbs. Paradoxically, the new minority status led to \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tmore exclusion and to less protection, mainly because it was soon politicized \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tand instrumentalised. Rroma are also discriminated because of their purportedly \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tpoor hygiene. Rhat hygiene should not be judged based only on observations of \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe conditions of gardens and courtyards is not part of this discussion. Until \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t2004, according to the journalists, forced sterilizations of Rroma women were \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tundertaken. From the State\u2019s perspective, these women exploited the social system \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tby excessively drawing on children\u2019s allocations. The segregation of Rroma \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tchildren in Slovakia continues to this day. Many are excluded from regular \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tschools by fictitious diagnosis of disabilities.<\/p>\n
A section is devoted to the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfate of Rroma during World War II. The persecution and extermination of \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tapproximately 500,000 to 1.5 million Rroma by the Nazis was historically never \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\treally acknowledged. One explanation for this omission is the no less racist reasonning \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthat Rroma were persecuted and killed by the Nazis, not for racial reasons, but \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tbecause of their anti-social and criminal behaviour. Lake Smith concludes his \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tarticle with a statement of his journalist colleagues Markus Pape that the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tnationalisms of Eastern Europe are the result of a crisis of identity after the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfall of the Soviet bloc. In this new form of identity, there is no room for \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRroma.<\/p>\n
