Several newspapers in \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSalzburg report on homeless Rroma who have took shelter under bridges after the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tclosing of the emergency shelters. They are now being evicted again. Newspapers \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tpresent once more a highly biased image of impoverished Rroma, which is regularly \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tinterpreted by right-wing nationalists as deliberate anti-social behaviour. The \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tmentioning of ethnicity in newspaper articles is mostly counterproductive to \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe social position of the represented group. In addition, beggars, thieves or homeless \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tare often automatically assimilated to Rroma through the view from the outside, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\talthough the ethnic membership is far from obvious: \u201cThe church aid organization has announced to provide the Roma beggars \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t15 to 20 beds now once more. [ … ] The Caritas had opened the night shelter \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u201cArch South\u201d in the district of Herrnau until January 11. In this emergency \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tshelter, \u00a0only men were admitted. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAfter that, the emergency shelter moved into the vacant care institution of the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tarchdiocese in the district of M\u00fclln, where ten men and up to 15 women were \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\thoused. At the end of March, this accommodation was closed\u201d<\/em> (Salzburg 24 \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t2014). How the newspapers know about the ethnicity of the homeless, which is \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tanything but easy to determine, is not discussed (compare Salzburger \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tNachrichten 2014).<\/p>\n
