In the community \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u0160ari\u0161sk\u00e9 Micha\u013eany in eastern Slovakia everything was segregated at the start \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tof the headmaster\u2019s tenure. Rroma children were playing on a separate \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tplayground, ate lunch separately from the white children and were placed in \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tseparate classrooms, officially due to different education levels. Higgins \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcompares the fight against the segregation of Rroma with efforts to achieve racial \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tequality in the United States in the 1950s. In Slovakia, the efforts to achieve \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tequality are waged primarily through the courts. In spite of his advocacy for \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tlegal action, the headmaster of the school is described to be leaning more \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ttowards cultural mediation. He opened the school canteen for Rroma children, suppressed \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe segregated playgrounds as well as the rule that forbade Rroma parents to \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tenter the school building. Common classes and teaching is still in its early \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tstages. This process must be done slowly, as otherwise white Slovaks flee the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tschool to go to other ones reinforcing racism and segregation. The prejudices \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tof participating parties are deeply rooted.
