{"id":1501,"date":"2013-07-12T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2013-07-12T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/%20rroma.org\/12-07-2013-rroma-phobia-in-the-czech-repubic\/"},"modified":"2022-07-24T16:13:04","modified_gmt":"2022-07-24T15:13:04","slug":"12-07-2013-rroma-phobia-in-the-czech-repubic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rroma.org\/de\/12-07-2013-rroma-phobia-in-the-czech-repubic\/","title":{"rendered":"12.07.2013 Rroma Phobia in the Czech Repubic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"background-color: white; \">Voice of Russia (2013) spoke to the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\thistorian Nadezhda Demeter about the growing \u201cRroma phobia\u201d in the Czech \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRepublic, which gained media attention with the pogroms in Budejovicy last \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tweek. Demeter sees a discrepancy between social institutions such as the Roma \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tFaculty at Charles University in Prague, the Czech Rroma party or human rights \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\torganisations for minorities and the effective integration and equality of \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRroma in everyday life. In spite of the existence of such public institutions, \u00a0many Rroma do not get work, are excluded \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfrom medical treatment and are \u00a0denied \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tof potential living space. The so-called Rroma phobia has origins in the denial \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tof a part of Czech history where the memory of the murder of Rroma is not \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tacknowledged. She also speaks about invisible Rroma who are not perceived as \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tsuch: \u201cthere are not that few Roma in the Czech Republic who are educated and, so \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tto speak, from the middle class. But they do not learn their native language, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\thave completely assimilated. Apparently, they still know that once their \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdocuments were labelled with an &#8216;R&#8217;.
