The acts of \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tviolence against Rroma have especially increased since the decline of the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcommunist system, but actually reach back for centuries: <em style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u201cRacism against Roma has a centuries-old tradition, which was once \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tstronger and sometimes weaker, depending on historical events. Especially after \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe end of the communist regime in Bulgaria, the Roma in Bulgaria see themselves \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthreatened by violent, racist acts. Resentment because of their skin colour, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tlanguage and culture as well as discriminatory treatment by authorities, police \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tand judiciary is part of everyday life for the Roma in Bulgaria.\u201d <\/em>He continues \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tto go into the details of individual pogroms and incidents and tries to give \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tpossible explanations for the racist violence. One aspect is economic crises \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tand the resulting impoverishment of broad sections of the population. Combined \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twith a low level of education, more and more people are willing to accept \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tracist slogans in such a situation. Furthermore, there is completely one-sided \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tinformation about criminal Rroma which is supposed to underpin their alleged \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tanti-social behaviour. Another problem is that racist acts of violence are \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\toften not identified as such, but are trivialized as \u201cnormal\u201d criminal acts. Lausberg \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\talso discusses the various reasons for a migration to Western Europe, which are \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\toften excluded in the polemical debate about mass immigration: <em style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u201cThe reasons for the emigration of Bulgarian \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRoma especially to western states of the EU, including the federal republic, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tare on one hand the hope for better economic prospects in the target countries. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tOn the other hand, it is the manifest racism of the (white) majority of the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tpopulation, which is also responsible for the emigration. [&#8230;] In Sofia, and \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tother cities, at the end of socialism mostly teenagers or young adults who \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\thunted Roma formed militant racist groups. On 29.10.1992, a group of students \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfrom the Lovech-sports school attacked three Roma in a disco. Three days later, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tone Rom due to cerebral haemorrhage caused by the blows. On 31.10.1993, the Roma \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tClub in Varna was attacked and the furniture destroyed. In winter 1992\/93, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tbegging Roma street children were systematically beaten by students of an elite \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tuniversity.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lausberg, Michael (2014) Antiziganismus \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tin Bulgarien: Gewaltexzesse, deren Ursache offiziell geleugnet wird.
