The soon to be published \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tspecial report by the Irish Obudswoman for children, Emily Logan, identifies \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tethnic profiling in the context of the child removals in October of last year. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tIn response to case of the blond Rroma-girl Maria in Greece who taken into care, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tin Ireland, two child removals also took place. These were based on racist \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcriteria: The children who were removed were light-skinned and blonde and had \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdark-skinned, dark-haired parents. That this is genetically possible, though \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tnot frequent, was completely neglected. The Rroma parents were rather \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tsubordinated to a general suspicion of child trafficking, which is another \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tracial prejudice. DNA tests confirmed the legitimate parenthood of the children \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ttaken away. The Irish justice minister admitted the issues in the child \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tremovals, but portrayed the circumstances of the removals in a rather \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tbelittling fashion: \u201cOn occasions people \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t. . . adapt stereotypical images of individuals from minority communities [and] \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdon\u2019t always behave in a manner that\u2019s appropriate,\u201d Mr Shatter said. \u201cIndeed \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ton occasions [they] will jump to conclusions that the basic factual background does \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tnot warrant, had they been dealing with individuals who were perhaps born in \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tIreland and whose families had been in Ireland going back many generations,\u201d he \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tsaid\u201d<\/em> (compare Duncan 2014, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tIrish Examiner 2014, Irish Independent 2014, Newstalk 2014, O\u2019Doherty 2014).<\/p>\n
