At \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe beginning, she addressed the intense politicization and instrumentalization \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tof Rroma by politics and journalism. The Rroma are once again made to \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tscapegoats for all social ills and abused in political debates about \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\timmigration, debates that are dominated by fear mongering.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">From a historical \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tperspective, Taylor states that until today, Rroma are not part of the official \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\thistoriography. However, Rroma are not granted separate history either, rather, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthey are ascribed an existence in a timeless bubble untouched by modern life. Taylor \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twants to overcome this deficiency with her book, and wants to complement the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tofficial, popular history with the history of the Rroma. She does it by \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tconnecting important historical upheavals, such as the emergence and decline of \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tempires, wars, political upheavals, the expansion of the state of law, enlightenment \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tand social crises with the history of the Rroma and examining mutual influences: \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<em>\u201cIf exploring the history of Romani \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tpeoples was a way of holding up a mirror on the societies in which they lived, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tit was also a salutatory lesson that it is naive to believe in a progressive \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tview of history: things don\u2019t always get better, especially if you belong to a \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tstigmatized ethnic group. [\u2026] Carrying out the research for this book showed \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\thow the enslavement of Gypsies coexisted under the Ottomans with remarkable \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcultural diversity and autonomy; how branding, mutilations and \u2018gypsy hunts\u2019 \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\toccurred at the same time that Gypsies established themselves across Europe and \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe Americas; and how despite developments in education and attitudes toward \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tminorities across modern Europe and the U.S. has failed to bring anything like \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tactive acceptance of the place of Romani peoples within its societies.\u201d <\/em>Taylor\u2019s \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tbook seems to be an interesting, new contribution to the historiography of the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRroma, even though one cannot critically assess her book with her own review. Her \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tbook should be read with a critical attitude, as many scientists and Rroma experts, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdespite their good intentions, reproduce and maintain false information about \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe Rroma.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Taylor, Becky (2014) It&#8217;s Time Historians Get Past \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe Stereotype of Romani Peoples and Write Them into History.
