{"id":1666,"date":"2013-12-20T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2013-12-20T01:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/%20rroma.org\/20-12-2013-manuel-valls-acquitted-in-racism-indictment\/"},"modified":"2022-07-26T13:48:49","modified_gmt":"2022-07-26T12:48:49","slug":"20-12-2013-manuel-valls-acquitted-in-racism-indictment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rroma.org\/de\/20-12-2013-manuel-valls-acquitted-in-racism-indictment\/","title":{"rendered":"20.12.2013 Manuel Valls Acquitted in Racism Indictment"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Manuel \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tValls was acquitted by a French Court of the charge of racism (Le Monde 2013). \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe movement against racism had filed a lawsuit against Valls after he had \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tpublicly stated that Rroma have an extremely different lifestyle to the French, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tand had the habit of returning to Romania and Bulgaria. The court justified its \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdecision with the reasoning that Valls\u2019 statements were made in connection with \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ta debate over the public interest and were not racist in the choice of words. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe Court thereby ignores the role of intellectual arson and the power of \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tderogatory cultural attribution to the public. A conviction would have been a \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tsign of a more tolerant society, where defamatory statements do not fall under \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe category of freedom of expression. The court stated: \u201c<em>il n\u2019appara\u00eet pas [que ces propos] exc\u00e8dent les \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tlimites admissibles de la libert\u00e9 d\u2019expression<\/em>\u201d \u00a0<em>[It does not seem that \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthese statements exceed the admissible limits of the freedom of expression]<\/em> \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t(Lib\u00e9ration 2013).<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lib\u00e9ration (2013) Propos sur les Roms: une \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tplainte contre Valls class\u00e9e sans suite.
