This commissioner \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tshould urge the EU member states to respect the rights of minorities and \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tprescribe sanctions if needed: \u201c<em style=\"font-family: Arial;\">For \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSark\u00f6zi it is \u201chigh time\u201d that a male or female commissioner for minorities \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twith a focus on ethnic groups, Roma and Sinti, as well as refugees that escape \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfrom worldwide crisis areas to Europe, is put in place. [&#8230;] Thereby, a \u201cpermanent, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tpolitical and societal solution for Roma and Sinti in Europe\u201d could be found, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\the said in a statement\u201d<\/em> (Vienna online 2014). In an extensive interview \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twith mokant.at, Sark\u00f6zi explains his views on the current situation of the Rroma \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tin Austria. He states a clear decline in discrimination since the official \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\trecognition of the Rroma minority and the attack of Oberwart in 1995. The \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ttragedy caused a caesura in the Austrian society and created an awareness of \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe discrimination against the minority. As far as the culture of the Rroma concerns, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSark\u00f6zi denies uniform characteristics that all Rroma share: <em style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u201cIs there a separate, unified culture of the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRoma? This does not exist. Not even among the Austrian Roma people. Why? We \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tlive in different nation-states. Most Sinti belong to Germany and were \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tinfluenced by this culture. We have adopted the culture, which is predominantly \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tpresent in the country or the region. To select the German example: In Berlin, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe Sinti or Rrom will be as Prussian as the Prussian, and in Bavaria as \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBavarian as the Bavarians!\u201d (Winterfeld 2014). <\/em>One has to contradict him in \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tone point, however. He denies that there are overarching traditions. These exist, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\teven if the various groups practice them differently. The most Rroma speak Rromanes, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tgoing back to Sanskrit, they share many traditions. The statement that the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRroma belong to different religions, Sark\u00f6zi is absolutely right. He moreover stresses \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\thow important it is that the majority population makes offers of integration, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tto the Rroma as well as other minorities. For without such a willingness to accept \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tother people in a society, a positive integration \u2013 and not an assimilation \u2013 is \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tvery difficult to achieve. Sark\u00f6zi also emphasizes the importance of education \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfor a successful integration of the Rroma.
