{"id":1742,"date":"2014-04-25T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-04-25T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/%20rroma.org\/25-04-2014-daily-mail-confirms-stereotypes-about-rroma\/"},"modified":"2022-08-21T07:33:24","modified_gmt":"2022-08-21T06:33:24","slug":"25-04-2014-daily-mail-confirms-stereotypes-about-rroma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rroma.org\/de\/25-04-2014-daily-mail-confirms-stereotypes-about-rroma\/","title":{"rendered":"25.04.2014 Daily Mail confirms stereotypes about Rroma"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">In its latest post, the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBritish tabloid <em style=\"font-family: Arial;\">Daily Mail<\/em> supported \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tracist stereotypes about criminal Rroma gangs who attack tourists in Paris. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAllen (2014) provides information on a group of young Rroma \u2013 how he knows \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tabout the ethnicity of the perpetrators, is completely unknown \u2013 who wanted to \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\traid a middle-aged man at a cash machine in the centre of Paris, and were filmed \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tby a surveillance camera. Allen further reports on the internal police writing \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthat last week triggered a flood of press articles. The letter called for the systematic \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\teviction of all Rroma in the sixth arrondissement, which is illegal under \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tFrench law. Allen comments about this: <em style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u201cCharity \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tand human rights groups were furious last week when a leaked police memo called \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfor the &#8216;systematic eviction&#8217; of Roma from the centre of the city. [\u2026] A \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tspokesman for Charity group Catholic Help described the note as a &#8216;scandal&#8217;, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tsaying that it &#8216;stigmatised a poor community&#8217; and amounted to &#8216;racial \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tprofiling&#8217;- something which is illegal in secular France. But \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tother Paris officials argued that Roma are behind most of the crime in the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcity, involving themselves in everything from aggressive begging to muggings \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tand burglaries. Gangs of young Roma, including women and children, can \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tregularly be seen harassing tourists. Many of the Roma beggars who congregate \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\taround cash points and banks have very young children with them, including \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tbabies. Most of them live in large shanty towns on the outskirts of Paris, but \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tmore and more are setting up new camps in central parks and squares.\u201d <\/em>Journalists such as Peter Allen \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tstill share the opinion that they spread the truth about Rroma, because they \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tassume that reality consists only of the visible facts. The fact that a large \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tpart of the Rroma is not criminal is completely ignored in this logic. The \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfocus is solely on the deviant behavior that is associated with ethnicity. The \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfact that the ethnicity of the perpetrators is anything but clear becomes \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tobvious in Allen\u2019s own article. He proceeds on the assumption that all perpetrators \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tare Rroma and naturalizes this suspicion to a journalistic fact.
