The right faction received 21% of the expressed votes  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tin the elections earlier this month. The party accuses Rroma of culturally related  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tantisocial behaviour and crime, even if it recognizes that not all Rroma stand  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tout negatively: <em style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u201cFew parties have  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tattracted as much attention as Jobbik, due to its sophistication and its  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tinfluence within Hungary. \u201cJobbik has a pretty decent structure; they&#8217;re not  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tjust a bunch of thugs,\u201d said Cas Mudde, a University of Georgia professor who  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tstudies far-right parties. \u201cThey have highly qualified people with university degrees.\u201d  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tJobbik&#8217;s appeal, its supporters say, rests on a range of promises, from  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcleaning up corruption to reforming the education system. Its leaders  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tvigorously reject accusations of racism. But human-rights activists say  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tJobbik&#8217;s candidates regularly exploit anti-Roma prejudice. Jobbik \u201chas made  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tanti-Roma statements a pillar of its political strategy,\u201d the European Union&#8217;s  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tFundamental Rights Agency said in a recent report. The Jobbik platform, for  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\texample, criticizes Roma who \u201cwish only that society maintain them through the  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tunconditional provision of state benefits.\u201d Not all Roma are criminals, another  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tJobbik statement concedes, but it adds, \u201c&#8217;Gypsy crime&#8217; is real. It is a unique  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tform of delinquency, different from the crimes of the majority in nature and  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tforce.\u201d<\/em> It is dangerous to relativise a doubtlessly racist dominated party programme  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tbecause it admits that not all Rroma are criminals. Their demagoguery is no  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tless serious nor less problematic because of that. A fraction, which bases its  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tpolicy on the exclusion and defamation of an ethnic group, and comes to a full  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t21% percentage of voters, must give pause to even die-hard optimists. Unfortunately,  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\thistory has shown all too clearly that between political defamation and  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tphysical destruction there is only a narrow line. Only a year ago, the  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tHungarian publicist Zsolt Bayer asked publicly for an extermination of the  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRroma, without being sentenced to any penalty.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bendavid, Naftali (2014) Jobbik Takes Aim at Roma.
