Grunau \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t(2013) reports on the newly signed treaty between the German state of Baden- \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tW\u00fcrttemberg and the local Land Association of German Sinti and Roma. The \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tagreement recognizes that the Rroma have been a part of German society for the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tlast 600 years and as an ethnic minority have the right to protect and promote \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ttheir interests. With the signing of the Treaty, the State of Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\talso acknowledges its historic responsibility in the genocide of the Rroma and \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tmust attempt to fight against antiziganism: \u201cThe \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tState Treaty in Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg is intended to inform. The State agrees to \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tenshrine the past and present of the Sinti and Roma in the curricula for \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tschools and teaching so as, “to counter possible prejudices.” A \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tresearch centre for the history and culture of the minority as well as of \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tantiziganism will be created.\u201d <\/em>The chairman of the National Association of \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tGerman Sinti and Roma, Daniel Strauss, is hoping for a pioneering role of the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tState of Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg in the fight against racism and social exclusion. It \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tis greatly hoped that the concessions made in this contract do not only remain \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tstatements of intent.<\/p>\n

The Stuttgarter \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tZeitung (2013) adds that around 12,000 Sinti and Roma live in Baden- \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tW\u00fcrttemberg. They form one of the four recognized minorities besides the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tFrisians, Sorbs and the Danes. That Jews are not mentioned is somewhat astonishing. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe representatives of the Rroma also complained that, contrary to Schleswig-Holstein, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tit did not come to a change in the state constitution, in which the protection \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tof the Rroma is enshrined. The Schwabian newspaper (2013) adds that the Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tState Association will receive 500,000 euro from 2014 and that a Council for \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe affairs of the German Sinti and Roma has been created.<\/p>\n
