Discriminatory \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tattitudes towards members of the Rroma minority are common in all political \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tparties of the country, they state. As a starting point they take a racist joke \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tof the social democrat Dan Tudorache, who is said to have written during a \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twinter storm earlier this year, that it was so cold that he had seen a \u201cgypsy\u201d \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twith his hands in his own pockets. Rroma activist Ciprian Necula condemned \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tTudorache\u2019s statement in the media, but was in turn confronted with a lot of \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tnegative comments. Rroma politician Damian Draghici announced on the occasion \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tof the incident that Romanian politicians showed no skills or awareness about \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdiscriminatory statements: <em style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u201cWhen you are \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfive years old and you put your hand on the oven, you know it burns,\u201d he says, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tmaking a comparison, \u201cbut if you have never put your hand on the oven until \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tyou&#8217;re 30 years old \u2013 you will get burned at 30. [\u2026] What is necessary, he \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\targues, is to educate such people about what discrimination means.\u201d<\/em> Bird\/Candea \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tsee the situation more realistically than Draghici. They state that it is \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\timmaterial whether behind discriminatory remarks one finds naivety or bad \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tintentions. What is crucial is the marginalization and degradation of the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tminority in the political and social everyday life, as the National Council \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAgainst Racism confirms. The pejorative attitudes towards Rroma are taught to \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe ethnic Romanians from an early childhood and repeated regularly, the authors \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tstate: <em style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u201cPrejudice is recycled from \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tgeneration to generation and ingrained in Romanian children at an early age. In \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRomanian playgrounds it is common to hear elders tell their children they \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tshould behave or \u201cthe gypsies will come and kidnap you\u201d and, if they have paint \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tor mud on their face or hands, that the infant is \u201cdirty like a gypsy.\u201d\u201d <\/em>The \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tsegregation of the Rroma in the schools, in the labour market and in the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tresidential districts of Romania continues to be present, Bird\/Candea confirm. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tIt is time to finally end this. This includes the better education of the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tgeneral population, which allows to reduce prejudices which are based on \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tignorance.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bird, Michael\/Candea, Stefan (2014) Anti-Roma views rampant across all Romanian \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tpolitical parties.
