{"id":1840,"date":"2014-01-31T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-01-31T01:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/%20rroma.org\/31-01-2014-rroma-holocaust-commemoration\/"},"modified":"2022-08-04T11:50:48","modified_gmt":"2022-08-04T10:50:48","slug":"31-01-2014-rroma-holocaust-commemoration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rroma.org\/de\/31-01-2014-rroma-holocaust-commemoration\/","title":{"rendered":"31.01.2014 Rroma Holocaust commemoration"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">The 27th of January is \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe official day of remembrance for the victims of National Socialism in \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tGermany. On the 27th of January 1945, the Red Army liberated the concentration \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcamp of Auschwitz-Birkenau. The state chairman of the Hessian Sinti and Roma, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAdam Strauss, warned in his speech of the importance of civil courage and the danger \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tof spreading false information about Rroma. He further noted a continuity of \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tprejudice against this minority, which persists and is jointly responsible for \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe genocide. The Deputy Prime Minister of Hesse, Al-Wazir, pointed on the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdanger of intellectual arson and the way it is fuelled by ill-considered \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tremarks: <em>\u201cHe directly pointed to the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcurrent debate on poverty refugees from Romania and Bulgaria, who come to \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tGermany. Al-Wazir called it \u201cimportant that we do not build new walls due to \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\treckless words.\u201d <\/em><em style=\"\">\u00a0<\/em><em>Prudence and \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\trespect are important \u201cto us Germans in this debate.\u201d On the same day Bouffier, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tin a newspaper interview, took a similar view of the debate on poverty \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tmigrants. It is important \u201cto use appropriate words to designate the facts\u201d, he \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tstated\u201d <\/em>(von Bebenburg 2014).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">In his text, Hagemann \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t(2014), addresses the discrimination of Rroma by German teachers during and \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tafter the Second World War. NSDAP compliant teachers wrote students from ethnic \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tminorities \u201ccharacteristics of their race\u201d into their testimonials and managed \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tto obtain their deportation. During the memorial service in Menden, the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tsecondary school students read frighteningly many names of young children. They \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twere infants who were born after 1940 and were nonetheless deported in March \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t1943. It is particularly shocking that many of the teachers were allowed to \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tteach after the war had ended and were supported by public institutions such as \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe Catholic Church:<em> \u201cThe students called \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe names of the teachers who were allowed to educate the children of Menden in \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe post-war years. They criticized the Catholic Church, which did not protect \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthese Catholics, the archbishops, who did not respond to petitions, although \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe brutal extermination of the Sinti and Roma was described in them in \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdramatic terms. [&#8230;] One student described the terrible conditions that were \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfaced by the Catholic Gypsies of Menden in Auschwitz, where they were branded as \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u201casocial\u201d with a black triangle on the clothing: they faced typhoid and diarrhoea, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tabuse and rape.
