{"id":1843,"date":"2014-01-31T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-01-31T01:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/%20rroma.org\/31-01-2014-the-rroma-identity-as-a-taboo\/"},"modified":"2022-07-26T14:50:35","modified_gmt":"2022-07-26T13:50:35","slug":"31-01-2014-the-rroma-identity-as-a-taboo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rroma.org\/de\/31-01-2014-the-rroma-identity-as-a-taboo\/","title":{"rendered":"31.01.2014 The Rroma identity as a taboo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Bollmann\/Kloepfer (2014)  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdraws an analogy between being gay and belonging to the Rroma ethnic group.  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWhereas the taboo around homosexuality has nearly disappeared and gays and  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tlesbians are predominantly socially accepted, the Rroma still face great  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\treservations: In the current debate, some authors only use the words Romanians  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tand Bulgarians, although they are talking about the Rroma. Bollmann and Kloepfer  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdo not state that this method is not only correlated with political correctness  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tbut with the prevention of further prejudices. It is repeatedly pointed out by  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRroma representatives that ethnicity is usually mentioned within a negative context  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tand thus discredits the Rroma and maintains a pejorative image of them. On the  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tother hand, the authors are right when they state the maintenance of prejudices,  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twho are caused by a negation of the subject: <em style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u201cThe mechanism of concealment worked earlier with gays and lesbians as  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tperfidious as it is today with the Roma. He who doesn\u2019t call things for what  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthey are plays \u2013 consciously or unconsciously \u2013 with hints and prejudices. The  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twider public then perceives only those exponents of the minority that correspond  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tto the popular stereotype and thus appear as \u201cfancy\u201d. These are the \u201cpoverty  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\trefugees\u201d, the \u201cimmigrants into the social system\u201d who pile up garbage \u2013 or with  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tbenevolence the musician who sings \u201cGypsy Songs\u201d. The successful lawyer from a  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRoma family remains as invisible as until recently the gay leaders in general.  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u201cI didn\u2019t want to be a Roma, I was ashamed\u201d said a lawyer from Essen last year  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tto a journalist.\u201d<\/em> But the apparent taboo about Rroma should not obscure the  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfact that it is most appropriate to use great caution when applying ethnic  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tterms and ascriptions. Imprudent statements free from any taboos can equally  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcontribute to the spread of prejudice as a too politically correct handling of  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ta subject. Not the ethnicity is crucial, but the identification of a problem  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tand the recognition of poverty. If Bollmann and Kloepfer think they need to  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tidentify poor Rroma as Rroma in order to help them, they have misunderstood  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tsomething significantly: <em style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u201cA particular  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRoma strategy is not required here\u201d, the German government propagated just  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\trecently<\/em>.\u201d Here the federal government is perfectly right. The debate on  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\timmigration is not a debate about Rroma, but one that exploits and politicizes  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe Rroma for their purposes.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bollmann, Ralph \/ Kloepfer, Inge (2014) Die Schwulen und die Roma.
