Martigues is a port town, 30 kilometres west of Marseille. The \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tbuilding is owned by the agency for environment, facilities and accommodation \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t(DEAL), which has requested the eviction. The judiciary has approved the request, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tand ordered the eviction of the around 40 people within a month. It also points \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tout that in the near future, a bypass is planned at the site of the building, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tand that the security of the place is not guaranteed. On the opposite side, the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\taffected Rroma and their supporters point out that all children of the families \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tare enrolled in local schools. The adults continue to educate themselves, have \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\temployment contracts, or are enrolled at the employment agency. An eviction \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twould hinder these integration efforts with new obstacles that don\u2019t foster an \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tinclusion of the immigrant Rroma and significantly complicate their chances to \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ta better future: <em>\u201cThe young Simonia, 14 \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tyears old, did not speak French five years ago. Today, she speaks the language \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tand leads the normal life of a grammarschool. \u201cEverything is going well at \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tschool. I have friends. For me it is important to study, because I do not want to \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\thave the same life as my parents do. I want to have a job and my own house.\u201d Because \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthey support and guide a community that wants to integrate, the collective of \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tsupporters demands a longer time frame [for evacuation] at the meeting with the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tprovincial office next Monday.\u201d<\/em> Once more, one needs to emphasise that the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tforced evacuations of informal settlements or empty houses complicate the long-term \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tintegration of the Rroma immigrants. The evictions reverse the integration \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tefforts of those affected or exacerbate them. The rigorous expulsion of the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tminority reflects the unwillingness of the French government to engage in an \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tactive integration policy. In addition, through the one-sided media focus on \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe informal settlements it is suggested that there are only Rroma who belong \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tto the underclass and are poorly educated. However, the Rroma from the slums \u2013 \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tan estimated 17,000 persons \u2013 constitute only a small part of all Rroma in \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tFrance. According to estimates of the Rroma Foundation, 100,000 to 500,000 \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRroma live in France. These invisible Rroma are integrated, work, and have their \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\town flats. They belong to the middle or even upper-class and are ignored by the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tFrench media, the public and politicians.
