Ulfat (2014) reports on \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe Hochfeld neighbourhood in Duisburg. In the public perception, the district \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tqualifies as being in trouble. Crime is supposedly on the rise, the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tinfrastructure is bad, according to outsiders. Ulfat juxtaposes this \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tperspective with the neighbourhood\u2019s residents statements. These relativise the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\thorror scenarios. Although there are indeed parallel societies that almost \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tnever meet since the closure of large industrial plants, the social interaction \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tof most local residents is respectful, the journalist states. As far as Rroma \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tare concerned, Ulfat relativises the dramatic scenarios of a mass immigration \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tof antisocial Rroma. There are just about 4,000 Rroma living in Duisburg. Regarding \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe social tensions, these already existed before the Rroma arrival . If one \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\toffers Rroma the possibility to integrate, they take this chance. An expert of \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe quarter, the protestant pastor Heiner Augustin, states: \u201cIf these people are moving into a good, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twell-established neighbourhood, it happens what always happen: the immigrants \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tadapt. They see the cleanliness on the street, they begin to understand the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcycles of garbage disposal \u2013 and they join in. They begin to cultivate gardens, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tto beautify the streetscape with flower boxes in the window. Roma also like to \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tlive pretty!\u201d Problems would arise only if too many of these poor immigrants are \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcrammed into one place. \u201cBut this is not a cultural problem. Imagine, you would \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tsqueeze 600 poor Germans into an apartment building with 20 apartments \u2013 no \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\thope of finding work, no money, no government assistance. It would not look much \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdifferent than in the Roma settlements\u201d, the pastor assures.\u201d However, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tinterviewed pastor also reproduces several stereotypes about Rroma: Clan \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tchiefs, who pinch money from them and force the women into prostitution, control \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe immigrants. However, Rroma are organised in a largely egalitarian way. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSo-called \u201cclan-structures\u201d are a prejudice and not a cultural feature of the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tminority.<\/p>\n
