The head of the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcommunity of Cserdi strives for a social policy, in which the unemployment rate \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tis as low as possible and the work ethic as high as possible. L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Bogd\u00e1n, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twho is himself a Rrom, has significantly reduced the unemployment rate through his \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tactive economic policy: <em>\u201cI am mayor since \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t2006\u201d, says the feisty 41-year-old, \u201cbefore we had approximately 200 burglaries \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ta year, today there is only a third of it. [&#8230;].<\/em> <em>We now have a recreation home at the Lake Balaton, 20 acres of woods, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twe build vegetables on 15 acres, and have 3,000 square meters of greenhouses. \u201cAs \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe first action, Bogd\u00e1n closed the local pub; he built a bridge between the non-Roma \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tand Roma neighbourhoods,<\/em> <em>induced the construction \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tof houses, and most importantly: he brought his citizens to work through public \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfunding. \u201cI do not believe in democracy, in which one queues for welfare, but \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tnot for work\u201d, he says.<\/em> [&#8230;] <em>Also, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tin the minds of the other Hungarians \u2013 the non-Roma \u2013 the mayor of Cserdi wants \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tto change something:<\/em> <em>together with \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tvillagers he drives to Budapest and distributes food from its own surplus to \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe needy. [&#8230;] For the mayor of Cserdi, it is about helping, but also about \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe headline: Roma help the poor.\u201d<\/em> With young Rromni from humble origins, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBogd\u00e1n goes to the University, to show them alternatives to the professional \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tlife of their parents. In Hungary, there are 600,000 to one million Rroma. They \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tbelong to all social strata. Not all are marginalised and poorly educated, as it \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tis usually suggested in the media.
