{"id":1131,"date":"2014-11-07T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-11-07T01:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/%20rroma.org\/07-11-2014-stereotypes-about-rroma-in-ireland\/"},"modified":"2022-08-21T07:33:15","modified_gmt":"2022-08-21T06:33:15","slug":"07-11-2014-stereotypes-about-rroma-in-ireland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rroma.org\/fr\/07-11-2014-stereotypes-about-rroma-in-ireland\/","title":{"rendered":"07.11.2014 Stereotypes about Rroma in Ireland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">On the occasion of a  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tracist mob in Waterford that agitated against Rroma at the end of October, McCarthy  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t(2014) conducted a social experiment: She disguised herself as a Romni beggar  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tin order to understand the experiences of marginalised people. The social  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\texperiment that was designed with good intentions, unfortunately prompts McCarthy  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tto spread numerous stereotypes and misinformation about Rroma: she considers that  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tall, or many Rroma, are poor and are beggars. In addition, she uncritically makes  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tallusions to organised begging gangs, human trafficking and arranged child  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tmarriages. That a considerable proportion of the Rroma are not poor and criminal,  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tbut lead normal existences, remains unmentioned: <em>\u201cAs a Romani in Dublin, you are either completely ignored or asked to  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tmove along. It&#8217;s no news to them to be treated poorly. It has defined their  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\texistence throughout history. They were expelled or enslaved, sentenced to  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ttorture and death, segregated and discriminated against pretty much ever since  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthey were brought to Europe from northwestern India and Pakistan. They never  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tidentified themselves with a territory. They don&#8217;t have a distant homeland or  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tany rights to national sovereignty anywhere. The world&#8217;s true travellers, on  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe fringes of society, they are a cultural enigma to the rest of the conforming,  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ttechnologically-savvy world. In many cases they don&#8217;t own anything like social  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tsecurity numbers or credit cards.\u201d <\/em>In the UK, according to assessments of  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe Rroma Foundation, there are an estimated 90,000 to 120,000 Rroma. The majority  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tof them is integrated, goes to work, and is sedentary. However, in the in  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\trecent months and years, right-wing populist parties and the media have spread  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfears of a mass immigration of Eastern European Rroma, which would allegedly  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tabuse the British social welfare system and do not want to integrate. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Thompson (2014) conveys  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ta more nuanced notion of the Rroma in Ireland. But also her portrait of a Rromni  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twho has been living in the country for fourteen years, is permeated by  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tstereotypes: Gaby Muntean works as a social worker in her community and speaks of  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe economic hardships that she and her husband faced at the beginning of their  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\timmigration. For a long time, they could not find any work and had to rely on  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe solidarity of their acquaintances. Aside from this stereotype, who mistakenly  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tequates Rroma with educational alienation and poverty, Muntean also points to  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe Rroma living integrated, of whom many have the Irish nationality.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>McCarthy, Barbara (2014) My day on the streets  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tas a Roma.
