{"id":1142,"date":"2014-10-08T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-10-08T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/%20rroma.org\/08-10-2014-forced-expulsion-of-rroma-in-miskolc\/"},"modified":"2022-07-26T13:57:14","modified_gmt":"2022-07-26T12:57:14","slug":"08-10-2014-forced-expulsion-of-rroma-in-miskolc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rroma.org\/fr\/08-10-2014-forced-expulsion-of-rroma-in-miskolc\/","title":{"rendered":"08.10.2014 Forced expulsion of Rroma in Miskolc"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Odehnal (2014) reports \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ton the eviction of around 600 Rroma from the North-Hungarian city of Miskolc. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAll the reasons cited for the eviction of the Rroma settlement, called by the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tlocals the \u201cnumbered streets\u201d, point to racist motives. On one hand, for nearby \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfootball stadium, which is to be developed into a Fifa-grade stadium, a bus \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tparking for 400 buses is planned instead of the Rroma settlement. However, between \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe stadium and the settlement, there is a big, empty wasteland that would also \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tserve this purpose. Much more obviously racist are the other reasons given. It\u2019s \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe upcoming mayoral elections: <em>\u201cIn the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twhole of Hungary, at October the 12th, local elections take place, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tand in Miskolc the campaign focuses completely on the topic of the alleged Roma \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcrime. Also the coalition of the left parties participates in it. Their \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcandidates campaign with the promise that they will \u201cmake order\u201d: Miskolc \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tshould be returned to the natives of Miskolc [meaning ethnic Magyars]. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCampaigns against the minority have been running in Miskolc for years. The \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tformer police chief of Miskolc, Albert Pasztor, stated in 2009 that exclusively \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRoma committed burglaries and robberies in the city: living together with the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tminority was \u201csimply impossible\u201d\u201d. <\/em>Now Pasztor runs for election as mayor \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tof Miskolc, as a socialist candidate. The incumbent city major, Akos Kriza of the Fidesz-party, justifies the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdestruction of the Rroma settlement on the grounds of wanting to improve public \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tsafety, which must be unequivocally interpreted as a deliberate expulsion of \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\talleged \u201ccriminal Rroma\u201d. The inhuman hierarchy of ethnic groups becomes most distinctly \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tmanifest among the far-right Jobbik: <em>\u201cOne \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\thas to separate the constructive from the destructive people\u201d<\/em>, party leader \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tGabor Vona announced two years ago, when they organized a protest march through \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe Romani settlement. That the degradation of democracy and the rule of law in \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tHungary are not only propaganda by foreign media, as nationalist Hungarian \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\trepeatedly claim in newspaper articles and Internet forums, should be becoming \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tclear. A state that does not want to protect its minorities from discrimination \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tand expulsion, but even promotes it, is no longer a real democracy (compare \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tPusztaranger 2014). <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Odehnal, Bernhard (2014) Die Roma sollen die \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tStadt verlassen.
