Molnar (2014) reports, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tas Odehnal (2014) already did at the beginning of this week, on the eviction of \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ta Rroma settlement in the eastern-Hungarian city of Miskolc. While those \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfamilies who have a lease can apply for a replacement payment of up to 7\u2019200 \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfrancs, all those who are in arrears for their rent or don\u2019t have any official \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tpapers for their house, will not receive any compensation. The Rroma residents \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tof this settlement in Miskolc were particularly affected by the decline of \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tstate-owned factories, Molnar states, where many of them worked. But the object \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tof their anger are the reasons for the settlement\u2019s eviction: the creation of a \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tbus parking area for a football stadium, and the openly racial policies of the Fidesz \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tand Jobbik parties, which even run campaign with the topic of \u201cGypsy crime\u201d. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSome of those affected hope for a better life in Western Europe, including in Switzerland: \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u201cWe are poor, but we have rights. We urge \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe European Union, of which Hungary is a member, to take care of our case\u201d, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdemands a Roma leader during a recently organised demonstration in Miskolc. \u201cOur \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\thouses were not ruins, they were perfectly habitable\u201d, confirms another, whose \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tproperty was also destroyed. Witnesses, among them Barbora Cernu\u0161\u00e1kov\u00e1, of Amnesty \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tInternational, share this opinion: \u201cGypsy Town\u201d deserves not at all to be \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tconsidered as a slum, they state. Many Roma have announced to want to leave \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tHungary. A group of several families is interested in Switzerland, \u201cparticularly \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tknown for its low unemployment rate\u201d, one of them announced, who is close to \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSwiss Roma.\u201d<\/em> In Hungary, according to estimates of the Rroma Foundation, there \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tare an estimated 600,000 to one million Rroma. While many of them are affected \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tby poverty and exclusion, there are also many well integrated Rroma, who belong \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tto the middle or even upper-class. These are not perceived as Rroma. <\/p>\n
