In Goberling, in the southeast of Austria, there were  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\taround 120 Rroma in the beginnings of the 1940s. Many of them were employed in  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe mining industry, as the historian Gerhard Baumgartner states. Then, in 1943,  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\talmost all of them were deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau: <em>\u201cIn the era of National Socialism, thousands of Roma have been  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tmurdered. Entire neighbourhoods were obliterated, including those in Goberling  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t(District Oberwart). Now, a memorial for the victims of National Socialism was  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tbuilt there. [&#8230;] Until their deportation, the Roma were virtually the only  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCatholics in Goberling.<\/em> <em>After the  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twar, their church remained empty.<\/em> <em>About  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t60 years ago, the Catholic parish of Stadtschlaining sold the church, the evangelical pastor of  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tStadtschlaining, Gerhard Harkam, said.<\/em> <em>The  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tmunicipality had initially taken over the church and later sold it to the  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tLutheran church of Goberling.<\/em> <em>Next to  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe Goberlinger Church, which is one of the oldest in Burgenland, a memorial  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tstone has been built now on the initiative of mayor of Goberling, Hans Bieler.\u201d  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/em>In Auschwitz-Birkenau alone, 30,000 Rroma registered were murdered.  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tResearchers estimate at least half a million casualties among the Rroma.
