Widmann and Widmer-Baggiolini \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t(2014) report in a current documentary about the life of Rroma in Switzerland. Unfortunately, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe journalists focus their attention only on those Rroma who are already \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tvisible and who are anyway in the media focus: Rroma who recently immigrated \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfrom Romania, many of whom live begging. At the beginning of the report, one \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcan see a young Rromni on a public square of Lausanne. She repeatedly speaks \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twith passers-by and asks them for some money. Before that, the audience is at \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\thome of the young woman and sees her together with her little daughter. She \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tbegs for herself and not for a criminal clan, as it is often incorrectly \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tstated. This stereotype is put into perspective at the very beginning. Even the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tpolice officer responsible for Rroma confirms that there is no organised begging \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tin Lausanne. The portrayed beggars state that they earn 15 to 20 francs per \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tday. Thus, they earning far less than the official estimates, which talk of \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tseveral hundred francs per day. A family portrayed has been repeatedly fined \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfor illegal camping and begging. Without the help of the Rroma organisation \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u201cOpre rrom\u201d, and its president V\u00e9ra Tch\u00e9r\u00e9missinoff, the family could not have paid \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe fines. For health care, the family is dependent on the organisation\u2019s help \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tand also takes help from the church. Two other recently immigrated families \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tlive in a big house, thanks to the help of a real estate owner. Here, Widmann \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tand Widmer-Baggiolini focus on the school enrolment of the children. These have \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tundergone numerous interruptions in their education, even if though they want \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tto go to school. A negative notion about lack of education among Rroma is \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tconveyed here. Another reproduced stereotype are traditional gender roles and \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tchild marriages: a young teenage girl goes not to school, as her mother states, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tbecause she is already married, and therefore must remain at home for reasons \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tof tradition. Most of the 80,000 to 100,000 Rroma who have been living in Switzerland \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfor generations, have a job, speak one of the national languages and send their \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tchildren to school. This is not mentioned. Neither is the fact that traditions \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tsuch as traditional gender roles or early marriages are critically questioned \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tby educated Rroma. At the end of the report, one sees some of the portrayed \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRroma back in Rumania. They live in poverty, but due to the large wealth gap \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tbetween Switzerland and Romania, they live appreciably better thanks to the panhandled \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tmoney. <\/p>\n
