Le Temps (2014) reports \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ton a group of 63 Rroma from Miskolc, who applied for asylum in Switzerland. The \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRroma fled the forced eviction by the city government of Miskolc, which expelled \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tan entire residential district for racist reasons. The most controversial \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\taction of the Hungarian authorities received international media attention, but \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthis did not alter anything about the forced displacement of hundreds of Rroma \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfamilies. Because Hungary has the status of a safe country, the chances of the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfamilies to be granted asylum are very low: \u201cThe \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tprocedure is unusual. Yesterday, towards three o\u2019clock in the afternoon, 63 \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tHungarian Roma arrived in front of the camp for asylum seekers in Vallorbe (VD), \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tto apply for political asylum in Switzerland, as Le Matin states in its daily edition. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThey came with a bus that was rented in Miskolc, a city in eastern Hungary. The \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdriver unloaded them in front of the railway station of the town. […] The \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\treception centre of Vaud was almost full, that\u2019s why the group was divided into \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthree parts: only fifteen applicants will be accommodated in Vallorbe. Fifteen \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tothers<\/em> are driven by bus to Pf\u00e4ffikon \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t(ZH), and thirteen to Basel. The chances of the Roma to be given asylum are \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tlow. As Le Matin reports, the spokesperson of the Federal Office for Migration \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t(FOM), L\u00e9a Wertheimer, emphasises that the confederation \u201ctreats each case \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tindividually\u201d. But, admittedly, \u201cif an applicant can return to a third country \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdesignated as safe by the Federal Council, and he has resided there before his \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tapplication in Switzerland, the FOM usually cannot grant the application.\u201d\u201d<\/em> \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe case described here shows once more, how difficult the assessment of the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tsecurity situation in a country is. The country analyses generally focus in \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ttheir reports on the protection from political persecution. Discrimination in \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\teveryday life, which in this case is even committed by politics itself, is negated \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tin this assessment. Rroma are not politically persecuted in Hungary. However, this \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdoes not mean that they are not affected by severe discrimination in everyday \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tlife, especially since the rise of the right-wing nationalist parties, who consciously \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\texaggerate ethnic differences: \u201cSandor \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tLakatos never felt like in a ghetto. […] Nevertheless, he and his wife got \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tinto the bus. […] On the question of what he hopes for in Switzerland, he answers \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tas vaguely as his fellow travellers: security. Not be insulted and spat upon as \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u201cdirty gypsy\u201d, to no longer have to fear the police and the neo-Nazis. […] It \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tis not difficult to meet aversion and pure hatred against Roma in Miskolc. As \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe emigrants pass through the numbered streets to the bus park, an older woman \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tstands at the roadside, looks at the procession in amazement and says to the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tjournalist: \u201cThank God that they leave. They don\u2019t want to work, but multiply \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tlike rats\u201d\u201d<\/em> (Odehnal 2014). The Swiss asylum authorities do not recognize \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthis situation. None of the 46 Hungarian Asylum applicants of the last two \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tyears was granted the right to stay (compare Neue Z\u00fcrcher Zeitung 2014, Pester \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tLloyd 2014, Sassoon 2014, Wacker 2014). \u00a0<\/p>\n
