The \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCommission has stated it will investigate the discrimination against Rroma in \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe Czech Republic, in particular the segregation of Rroma children in public \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tschools: <em style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u201cThe European Commission has \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tlaunched a formal investigation into the Czech Republic\u2019s treatment of its Roma \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tminority, in the latest attempt to improve the circumstances of the often \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tpersecuted group in Europe. [\u2026] A disproportionate number of Roma pupils are \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\teducated in schools for students with \u201cmild mental disabilities\u201d, which \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcampaign groups say amounts to segregation. Roma pupils account for more than a \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tquarter of students in these schools, despite being just three per cent of the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCzech population [&#8230;].\u201d <\/em>The high proportion of Rroma children at schools \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfor the disabled, which is documented by various studies, is actually in itself \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tproof that the minority is in fact discriminated against at public schools. The \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCzech government for its part has announced that one has made progress in the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfight against segregation, but that one could not abolish it from one day to \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe other, but only undo it step by step. Amnesty International in turn emphasizes \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tin a public statement that one has suggested to the Czech government for years \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthat the segregation of Rroma \u00a0children constitutes an intolerable situation. But nearly nothing \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twas done: <em style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u201cFor years, Amnesty \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tInternational has documented systemic discrimination against Roma children in \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCzech schools,\u201d said Nicolas J. Beger, Director of Amnesty International\u2019s \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tEuropean Institutions Office. \u201cYet the Czech government has so far failed to \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ttake effective measures to prevent, address and remedy this. In agreeing to \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tlaunch infringement proceedings, the commission has sent a clear message to the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCzech Republic and other member states \u2013 systemic discrimination towards Roma \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcannot and will not be tolerated\u201d,\u00a0 \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\the added.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Robinson, Duncan \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t(2014) Brussels probes Czech Republic over Roma.
