By working for the children\u2019s charity UNICEF, Cyrulniks perspective \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tis largely restricted to the excluded Rroma of Romania and Bulgaria. Despite \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\this emphatic perspective on the minority, he reproduces several stereotypes \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tabout Rroma, such as the misconception that Rroma were all originally travellers: \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<em style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u201cAt the time of communism, the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tsedentarisation of Roma was enforced, and the results seemed rather promising. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe kids could run around everywhere, were laughing and were supervised by the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u201cbig\u201d between 10 and 12 years and all adults of the village [Siria]. [&#8230;] The \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRoma population is important.<\/em> <em style=\"font-family: Arial;\">One \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\testimates 2 million of them for Rumania, of which 650,000 are nomads.<\/em><strong style=\"font-family: Arial;\"> <\/strong><em style=\"font-family: Arial;\">They \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tare therefore already largely sedentary.<\/em>\u201d However, Rroma have always been \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tlargely sedentary. <em style=\"font-family: Arial;\">The travelling \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tlifestyle ascribed to them is rather the result of their continued exclusion \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tand dissemination.<\/em> \u2013 Another focus of Cyrulnik\u2019s article is on the limited \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\taccess of the Rroma to health care institutions, the low enrolment rates and \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe continuing segregation. However, Cyrulnik forgets that, concerning this \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ttopic, he addresses only the visible, marginalised part of the minority and negates \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe integrated Rroma. In addition, it is dangerous to ascribe the marginalised \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRroma a collective apathy toward the inevitability of their situation: <em style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u201cThe segregation plays an important role in \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe difficult socialisation of Roma.<\/em> <em style=\"font-family: Arial;\">The \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdistance at the countryside reinforces the clan spirit and creates a culture that \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tis difficult to participate in and in which one group ignores the other. The \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRoma families set themselves limits and internalise the discrimination. They \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tsubject themselves to a faith that makes them say that they cannot do better, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthat this is their fate.<\/em> <em style=\"font-family: Arial;\">They easily \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tbecome school dropouts, which threatens to make their integration in Europe \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdifficult.\u201d<\/em> Nonetheless, Cyrulnik\u2019s plea to economically and socially foster \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe integration of the Rroma and to make better use of their work force for the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\teconomies of Europe is commendable and indeed of great significance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cyrulnik, Boris (2014) \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRoms: la future Europe aura besoin de leurs bras.
