{"id":1261,"date":"2014-11-26T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-11-26T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/%20rroma.org\/26-11-2014-rroma-and-the-pentecostal-movement-in-great-britain\/"},"modified":"2022-08-04T11:47:19","modified_gmt":"2022-08-04T10:47:19","slug":"26-11-2014-rroma-and-the-pentecostal-movement-in-great-britain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rroma.org\/fr\/26-11-2014-rroma-and-the-pentecostal-movement-in-great-britain\/","title":{"rendered":"26.11.2014 Rroma and the Pentecostal movement in Great Britain"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Ridley (2014) reports on \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe relationship between Rroma and the Pentecostal Church in Great Britain. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBased on the biography of the Rroma Pastor Jackie Boyd, she discusses the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcharacteristics and contradictions of the Pentecostal movement: she assesses as \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tpositive the efforts of the Pentecostal church to improve the education of the Rroma. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tOn one hand, this happens with the aim to understand the Bible in its details, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ton the other hand, the social status and position of the Rroma shall be \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\timproved. Ridley sees as negative the very conservative ideas with respect to \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe status of women. Thus, in the \u201cLight and Life\u201d church, it is forbidden for \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twomen to preach. Also, conservative role models dominate their role in the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfamily and in society: <em style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u201cLight and Life \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfollowers straddle both the mystic and the modern. They believe in miracles, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcarry out full-immersion baptism and follow the bible&#8217;s words literally. Yet the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tchurch is making some sweeping modern changes to the traditional gypsy culture: \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tit forbids fortune-telling, drinking and smoking, as well as arranged marriage \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twhich is practiced in mainland Europe. It supports education beyond 12 years \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\told. Around a fifth of gypsy children in the UK don\u2019t go to secondary school, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tand of those that do, half drop out. [\u2026] Dennis Latham, a volunteer to National \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tFederation of Gypsy Liaison Groups, says Light and Life is \u201cgetting people on \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe straight and narrow\u201d but is concerned it promotes male dominance over \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twomen. An evangelical Christian himself with a church affiliated to Light and \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tLife, he explains: \u201cThey won\u2019t let a woman preach in a church. I disagree with \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tit, because modern teaching is that women have equal rights. I\u2019ve seen Light \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tand Life put women out if they spoke out.\u201d\u201d <\/em>The statistic mentioned above that \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tclaims one-fifth of Rroma children in the UK do not go to school and that half \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tof high school students drop out has to be critically questioned. Since there \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tare no comprehensive surveys on Rroma in the UK, it has to be assumed that the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tstatistic only took into account Rroma already marginalised and therefore \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\teasy-to-find. However, many Rroma in the UK are well integrated.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">The self-empowerment of \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRroma through the Pentecostal church can indeed be seen as something positive, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tif one focuses on the aspect of the strengthening of civil rights and the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfostering of education. However, one should be cautious when the Pentecostal \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tmorality is said to be superior to other social values. Many Pentecostal \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tchurches forbid their members to use contraceptives, to abort and diabolize \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\thomosexuals as possessed by demons. Such a morality is not based on an \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tenlightened understanding of the world and independent critical thinking, but \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ton Christian traditions, which in case of contradictions, put themselves above \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe traditions of the Rroma. An uncritical subjection to conservative role \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tmodels and values should be questioned.
