The Romni Suzana S., who has been  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tliving in Lower Saxony for 28 years, is supposed to be deported to Serbia, along  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twith her five children. Even after almost three decades, the single mother still  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\thas no residency permit: <em style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u201cSuzana S. is 32  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tyears old and just like her children she was born in Germany. When she was five  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tyears old, Suzana lived with her parents in Serbia for four years, but she doesn\u2019t  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tspeak any Serbian. Emsland is her home and for her children this applies  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tanyway. \u201cI feel like a German\u201d, she says. [&#8230;] \u201cI do not know how to feed my  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tchildren in Serbia. There, we will have to live on the street\u201d, says S. She and  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ther children are Roma. Many members of the minority in Serbia suffer from  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tharassment by the authorities and are exposed to racist attacks by the  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tpopulation. S.\u2019 advocate Jan S\u00fcrig was in Serbia and is aware of the situation:  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u201cEven today, Roma in Serbia live forcibly on the margins of society, often in  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tinhumane conditions. They are discriminated against in virtually all levels of  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\teveryday life.\u201d [&#8230;] The many applications for a residence permit were  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\trejected.\u201d<\/em> In early September, Serbia is supposed to be classified as a  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tsafe country of origin by the German Federal Assembly. Then, asylum  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tapplications based on discrimination will only have a very small chance of approval,  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tas the official status is more important than individual experiences of  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdiscrimination. Akdag criticises in particular that the district of Emsland  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tjustified its decision with the explanation that Suzana S. didn\u2019t actively attempt  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tto integrate because she receives welfare. Her language skills and working  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tefforts and the schooling of children were classified as irrelevant. Now, the  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfamily S. is trying to receive a residency permit by approaching the commission  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfor hardship cases. What is particularly disconcerting about the described circumstances  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tis that Suzana S. and her children do not speak Serbian, which means that in the  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcase of a deportation to Serbia, they would be excluded more than ever. That immigration  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tauthorities did not consider this is hard to understand.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Akdag, Zeynep (2014) Abschiebung nach 28 Jahren.
