The French judges\u2019 syndicate \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcriticised the decision of Bobigny\u2019s mayor to evict the local Rroma settlement in \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdefiance of a judge\u2019s decision from July the 2nd. The judgment rejected a request \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfor eviction by the new mayor by referring to the fundamental rights to accommodation \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tand family life and in recognition of the demands of the European Court of \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tHuman Rights. The mayoral decree refers to the allegedly precarious security \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tsituation in the settlement, whereby no judicial assessment is necessary. In \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tearly February this year, a little Rroma girl of the settlement in question had \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdied, victim of a fire. The judges\u2019 syndicate appraised the planned eviction as \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tundermining of the judiciary: \u201cContacted \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tby Metronews, the syndicate of judges condemns the strategy of sapping a court \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tjudgment: by acting this way, the mayor\u2019s office \u201cchanges the judge\u201d. \u201cThe \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tmayor has the right to issue this decree and we do not know whether he has filed \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tan appeal against the judge\u2019s decision, which was made on July the 2nd, the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tsyndicate explains, but this way he subverts a judgment.\u201d The mayoral decree is \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\talready now controversial and will be studied by a new judge on Monday, as an \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\temergency, at the administrative court of Montreuil at 14:30. \u201cIt will be interesting \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tto see how he will judge\u201d assures the syndicate which will observe the verdict \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twith vigilance\u201d <\/em>(Bonnefoy 2014). For several years, \u00a0a debate has raged in France on how to \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdeal with the informal settlements, built by Rroma immigrants. While many \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tpoliticians from right to left are in favour of a rigorous eviction policy, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tindividual exponents advocate long-term solutions, which aim at integrating the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRroma immigrants. Approximately 200 people live in the settlement of Bobigny. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe organisation Ligue des droits de \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tl’homme<\/em> points out that the children of the camp attend local schools and would \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tbe the primary victims of a forced eviction (compare Breson 2014, Le Figaro \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t2014, Lib\u00e9ration 2014). On the evening of August the 26th, it was \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tannounced that the administrative court of Montreuil endorsed the decree of the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tmayor.
