RP Online (2014) \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\taddresses a debate on the graves of Auschwitz victims in Germany, among them \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tmany Rroma. Normally, graves are closed after a certain period of time if the lease \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tis not extended. In the case of Holocaust survivors, German Rroma associations \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\temphasise it is also about preserving history. Therefore, they fight against dismantling \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tof the graves of Holocaust survivors, which then would pass into oblivion. In \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tKrefeld, a descendant of a Rromni who survived the concentration camp, can no \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tlonger pay the grave fee due to financial issues. German Rroma associations \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdecidedly fight against dismantling the resting place: \u201cWith a harsh protest, two organizations \u00a0\u2013 The NRW state association of German Sinti and Roma and the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tGerman association for information and advice for victims of Nazi \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tpersecution\u00a0 \u2013 have been protesting \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tagainst the fact that the city is not renouncing the fees for lease of the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tgrave of a woman who was imprisoned in the Nazi death camp in Auschwitz.<\/em> It is the grave of a Roma woman named \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tKorpatsch. Her niece had paid for the grave for decades, but can no longer account \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfor the costs for an extension. Jost Rebentisch<\/em> of the federal association for victims of Nazi-prosecution accuses the city \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tof historical amnesia. The city disregards the criticism:<\/em> […] Because of legal reasons, it was not \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tpossible to formally renounce to the lease fee, as required by the association \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tof Rebentisch. Although there is an initiative of the Central Council of German \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSinti and Roma, according to which the burial of people persecuted in the war \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tshould be left free; but there is still no final settlement.\u201d <\/em>In Auschwitz-Birkenau \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\talone, 30,000 Rroma were murdered. Researchers estimate at least half a million \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcasualties among the Rroma. The genocide of the Rroma is much less known \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcompared to the mass murder of the Jews. This is another reason why a \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tpreservation of the memory of the victims and the inhuman actions is of great \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\timportance (compare Freie Presse 2014).<\/p>\n
