The planned \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcompensation payments, for which the legal framework is created at the moment, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twere considered only after massive criticism by the United Nations. Although in \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t2009, the government apologized for the caused suffering, until now, the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tvictims had to individually sue the various hospitals where the sterilisations \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twere performed: <em>\u201cBetween 1971 and 1989, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tup to 90 thousand Roma women in former Czechoslovakia were sterilised. The \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tgovernment has apologised, but until this point has offered little else. [\u2026] The \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCzech Republic&#8217;s Human Rights Minister Jiri Dienstbier said that the necessary \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tlegislation should be completed by the end of this year. Forced sterilisation \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tduring this period has also been documented in what is now Slovakia, but that \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tgovernment has made no similar move to provide compensation. RFI&#8217;s Anne-Marie \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBissada spoke with Katerina Cervena, a lawyer and project leader with the Czech \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tLeague for Human Rights, who said that Czech courts never criminalised forced \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tsterilisation because the police had been involved, and that some cases of \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tsterilisation may have occurred as late as 2007.\u201d <\/em>Already under the Habsburgs, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tin particular under empress Maria Theresa, Rroma severely suffered under \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\trepressive measures. Maria Theresa enacted a strict program of forced \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tassimilation that prohibited the Rroma to speak their language, to wear their \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ttraditional dresses and even to practice their traditional occupations. At the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\theight of the repression, she even prohibited the Rroma to marry among \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthemselves and children over five years were brought into non-Rroma families. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>RFI (2014) Forcibly \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tsterilised Roma women to be compensated by Czech government.
