The reason for the article  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tis the 70th day of remembrance of the evacuation of the Gypsy camp in  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAuschwitz-Birkenau. The systematic mass murder in the Gypsy camp cost nearly  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t20,000 people their lives. Markowska, whose entire family was murdered by the  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tNazis, worked with her husband for the Todt organisation who installed railway  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ttracks in the occupied territories: \u201cWhen somebody told Noncia about a group of  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRoma who was killed in a nearby forest, all her terrible memories came back. <em style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u201cWhen she heard that she went there immediately\u201d,  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tsays Parno [one of the rescued]. In the remains of the camp in the woods,  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tNoncia finds a child. It is her first. [&#8230;] On that day, Noncia decides to rebuild  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ther large family. Within a radius of 100 kilometres, she goes everywhere where  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe Nazis have murdered. She smuggles children out from the trains. She never  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tgets discovered. \u201cNationality did not matter to Noncia\u201d, says Parno. Some time  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tlater, when Noncia and her husband moved behind the front to the west, as far  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tas Gorzow, they also took lost children from there. German children. [&#8230;]  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tNoncia is now almost 90 years old and too sick to receive unknown visitors. In  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t2006, she received the second highest civilian honour of Poland, the Polonia  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRestituta with a star. But she never received compensation for her persecution.  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tHer little pension is barely enough for life and for pharmaceuticals.\u201d<\/em> This  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tmemorable article shows the importance of civil courage and action against the  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tpassive acceptance of prevailing circumstances.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hreczuk, Agnieszka (2014) Die Retterin im langen  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRock.
