The assessment \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tis sobering: The murders are still predominately kept quiet: repression and \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\thatred dominate instead of commemoration. On August the third 2009, a Rromni \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tand her daughter were shot in their home by right-wing extremists. In the previous \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tmonths four more Rroma had already been killed and 55 people were injured, some \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tseriously: <em style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u201cToday, five years after the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tlast murder, public commemoration is practically non-existent in Hungary. \u201cBoth \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tto the members of the former socialist-liberal government, in whose tenure the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tmurders were committed, as well as to the current government under Viktor Orb\u00e1n, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe subject is embarrassing\u201d, says the former liberal member of parliament \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tJ\u00f3zsef Guly\u00e1s. In 2009, he led a parliamentary inquiry committee on the Roma murders. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t[&#8230;] However, many things should be accounted for. Similar to the case of the NSU-murders, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tHungarian authorities played an inglorious role during the series of murders: intelligent \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tservices kept knowledge about the perpetrators secret. Hints into far-right \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tmilieu were followed too late, investigation findings were not centralised in \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ttime and compared. [&#8230;] The surviving victims didn\u2019t hear any apology so far from \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe representatives of the former socialist-liberal government.\u201d<\/em> After all, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tZolt\u00e1n Balog, Minister of Human Resources, initiated victim support for the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tsurvivors, who were paid between four and seven thousand Euros. Nevertheless, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe living conditions for most of them remain precarious: many of them live \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twithout running water, gas or sewage connection. The convictions of the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tperpetrators are continuously delayed. The judge of the first instance has not handed \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tin a written verdict about his trial, which is why the subsequent proceedings \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tagainst the accused cannot be continued.
