{"id":1365,"date":"2014-06-05T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-06-05T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/%20rroma.org\/05-06-2014-anti-roma-racism-is-on-the-rise\/"},"modified":"2022-07-26T13:48:48","modified_gmt":"2022-07-26T12:48:48","slug":"05-06-2014-anti-roma-racism-is-on-the-rise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rroma.org\/fr\/05-06-2014-anti-roma-racism-is-on-the-rise\/","title":{"rendered":"05.06.2014 \u201cAnti-Roma Racism Is On The Rise\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Wall (2014) reports on  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe correlation of a new advance of rightwing-nationalist right ideas in Europe  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tand the instrumentalisation of Rroma as scapegoats for general social ills.  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRather than drawing attention to the complex reasons for economic stagnation  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tand social inequality, right-wing nationalists and politicians abuse the  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tminority as an easy-to-understand explanation for these nuisances: <em style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u201cAnti-semitism is once again on the rise.  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t[&#8230;] Racism often functions as a device used by populist politicians to gather  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tvotes. In tough economic times, like the 1930s depression and the current  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tongoing austerity, racism can be electoral gold for the unscrupulous. If  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ttroubles can be blamed on an identifiable group, the racism can be nurtured and  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tmade to grow into deep-seated and enduring hatred.\u201c <\/em>As a particularly  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tquestionable trend, Wall shows that the threshold to discredit the Rroma is continuingly  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdecreasing. He sees a clear link between the political and media defamation of  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ta minority, the establishment of an institutionalized hatred against them, and  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ttheir physical destruction. Therefore, a responsible journalism is so  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\timportant: <em style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u201cWhen politicians and tabloids  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\traise fears about the Roma, we should remind them of where such fears led in  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe past. Fear leads to prejudice, prejudice leads to hate, hate leads to  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tviolence. It is never ever justified. Saloon-bar banter needs to be countered  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twith some stark presentation of the facts about where such banter led in the  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tlast century.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wall, Derek (2014) Anti-Roma  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRacism Is On The Rise.
