Some 1,300 people were  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tinterned there; hundreds of them were murdered. Despite this grim finding, today  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthere still is no memorial at the site of the former labour camp. Instead, there  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tis a pig farm built under communist rule. This irreverent handling of a  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tmemorial site was protested against for years. Culture Minister Daniel Herman  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\treaffirmed in a broadcast by the Czech radio the plans to establish a permanent  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tmemorial: <em style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u201cI am very pleased that the  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tPrime Minister has asked me and Human Rights Minister Ji\u0159\u00ed Dienstbier this  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tspring during the commemorations in Lety to find a solution for the pig farm,  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tand if appropriate, to seek its transfer. The aim is to build a memorial at the  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tsite of this former concentration camp, since currently, the memorial is  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tlocated on the former burial ground. [&#8230;] Of course, we want that there is a  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tsolution during the mandate of our government, because we feel responsible that  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tit has not yet happened. It is certainly a disgrace in the accounting of our  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tpast. I think it is necessary that one also confronts the painful moments. And  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tit is necessary to remember that this camp was not under the auspices of German  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tNazis, but was led by their Czech collaborators. The guards were Czechs. And  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthat\u2019s actually our share of the Holocaust against the Roma. We have to face  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthis issue.\u201d <\/em>The poor handling of the historical heritage of the Rroma Holocaust  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tis emblematic of the insufficient respect for the minority in the present.  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSegregated schools, discrimination in the labour market and widespread  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tprejudices continue to make the life of the Rroma anything but easy (compare  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tKraus 2014). \u2013 The chairman of the right-wing nationalist \u00dasvit party, Tomio  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tOkamura, provoked a political outcry on Monday when he announced that no one  \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\thad died in Lety.
