{"id":1447,"date":"2014-04-09T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-04-09T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/%20rroma.org\/09-04-2014-roma-stereotypes-enforce-racism\/"},"modified":"2022-07-26T14:01:03","modified_gmt":"2022-07-26T13:01:03","slug":"09-04-2014-roma-stereotypes-enforce-racism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rroma.org\/fr\/09-04-2014-roma-stereotypes-enforce-racism\/","title":{"rendered":"09.04.2014 \u201cRoma stereotypes enforce racism\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Mappes-Niediek (2014) \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\texplores the intimate integration of poverty and Rroma, which are too often \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tused interchangeably in the discussion on the minority, and prevent a critical \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tinquiry about the reasons of poverty: <em style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u201cIf \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tsomewhere beggars appear, it is sufficient to be written in the newspaper: \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthose are Roma! \u2013 and no one will ask what their mendicant existence has to do \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twith the social conditions in their country of origin or even with the euro \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcrisis. The ethnic name replaces a rational explanation. Even if no one mentions \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe name, it is always present in the backs of their heads. But even if we \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tavoid to call the Roma by name, we do not eliminate the clich\u00e9s. We have just \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tmade them irrefutable.\u201d <\/em>Mappes-Niediek, on the occasion of the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tinternational Rroma-day of April the 8th, calls to talk about the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\treasons for the impoverishment and defamation of the Rroma, and to not just \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tapply a politically correct vocabulary. Otherwise one trivializes poverty and \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tpromotes the stereotypes, and thus racism. Mappes-Niediek criticism is \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tlegitimate, but his statement, that the Rroma represent both an ethnic group \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tand a social class, is problematic. Although it should not be negated that \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthere are many Rroma living in great poverty, but one discredits with this statement \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tall those Rroma who live integrated and belong to the middle or upper class. It \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tis therefore questionable whether one fosters the social integration of the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRroma, if one defines them as an underclass: <em style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u201cIn reality, the Roma in Europe have never completely become a nation, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tbut at the same time always remained a social group, a underclass. That they \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twere always both, never crossed ours, the majority\u2019s mind. Firstly, until the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t20th century, the \u201cGypsies\u201d were just a \u201croving rabble\u201d. Then they were, definitely \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tsince the Roma national movement of the 1970s, a \u201cnation\u201d as the Germans, the French, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe Danes \u2013 a nation however that did not succeed, for whatever reasons, to \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\torganize itself like the others, and therefore secretly always was considered \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tinferior by the majority.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mappes-Niediek, Norbert (2014) Roma-Klischees f\u00fchren zu Rassismus.
