On the occasion of the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcurrent political debate in the German federal council on declaring of Serbia, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBosnia-Herzegovina and Macedonia as safe countries of origin, Baeck (2014) \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\treports on a demonstration in Bremen. All the federal states have to agree to \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe request. The protesters called the Bremer members of parliament to reject \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe application. This application is said to affect especially weak, vulnerable \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tmigrants, and to undermine the fundamental right to asylum: \u201cThe project is motivated by \u201cracism\u201d and \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u201cantiziganism\u201d, said a speaker at the rally yesterday. In fact, people should \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tbe deterred to come to Germany by law. This is justified by rising numbers of \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tasylum seekers and a low acceptance rate for people from these countries: In \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe first four months in 2014, a fifth of all first asylum applications came \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfrom people from Serbia, Macedonia and Bosnia-Herzegovina – 6,682 of 32,949 \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tapplications. If the three states (along with Ghana and Senegal) are declared \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tas \u201csafe\u201d, the asylum procedure is shortened. To prove individual prosecution \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\twould become more difficult, asylum applications would be considered to be \u201cevidently \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tunfounded.\u201d\u201d<\/em> Critics see it as particularly problematic that the new draft \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tlaw recognises the social exclusion of the Rroma, but at the same time rejects \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ttheir persecution. By this, the government is said to downplay the real \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tsituation on site. The reason for the increase in asylum applications from Southeast \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tEurope is said to \u201cbe due to the social \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tand societal problems of the Roma, but not because of a persecution of this \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tgroup.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The Green Party \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tpolitician Claudia Roth criticized that it is extremely problematic to conclude \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ton the basis of the definition of safe countries of origin that there is no \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\treal political persecution and exclusion. German interior minister Thomas de \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMaizi\u00e8re (CDU) sees this differently and refers to the support of the draft law \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthrough the German population. To which part of the population he refers to and \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\thow big this one is, remains unclear (Deutschlandfunk \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t2014). Wagner \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t(2014) meanwhile reports on the case of a Macedonian Rroma-family, which was \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdeported back to their country of origin in the middle of the night. The family became homeless and the father was charged \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfor the \u201edenigration of the Macedonian state\u201c.<\/p>\n
