Reilly (2014) reports the Rroma-palaces in Hunedoara, a city in central \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRomania. The magnificent buildings are said to be built almost exclusively with \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tmoney from criminal activities. The same applies to the sports cars of the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\thomeowners, who are also said to be paid for with criminal funds acquired in Great \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBritain. Reilly unmistakeably mixes political views on delinquent migrants with \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tracist prejudices against Rroma. That there are also Rroma who successfully \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\temerged from the system change, and made their money by clever trading \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tactivities in post-socialist capitalism, remains completely unmentioned. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tInstead, all owners of the magnificent buildings are accused to be part of \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcriminal organizations. The Rroma palaces are now threatened by demolition due \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tto lacking building permits: \u201cGaudy \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tpalaces suspected of being built by Romany criminal masterminds on the back of \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcriminal gang activities in the UK and other European countries are facing \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdemolition. Authorities in Hunedoara, a city in central-western Romania, are \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthreatening to tear down the so-called ‘gypsy palaces’ dotting the region \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tbecause all were built illegally, and many of them are safety hazards. Police \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tbelieve most were constructed on the back of illicit criminal enterprises \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tabroad.\u201d <\/em>As Reilly herself notes, the finding that the palaces were built with \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tillegal funds are based on presumptions. Based on assumptions, one should not publish \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tarticles that put other people in the pillory.<\/p>\n
