Halle Spectrum (2014) \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\treports about an anti-Rroma rally in Silberh\u00f6he, a district of the city Halle \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tin Saxony-Anhalt. In Silberh\u00f6he, numerous Rroma families have been living for \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tseveral weeks. At the rally, around 200 people expressed their anger about the neighbourhood\u2019s \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tnew residents. On banners, slogans like \u201cWe live here!\u201d could be read. According \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tto estimates of Halle Spectrum, in addition to angry residents, there were also \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tmembers of the extreme right among the 200 protesters: \u201cAccording to police representatives on site, several participants were \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tknown to the police, some of them as criminals […]. A total of eight criminal \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tcomplaints were filed, among other things for libel, assault and criminal \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdamage. In five cases, simple physical violence had to be applied to enforce \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdismissals. In one case, the offense of demagoguery is being examined.\u201d<\/em> \u2013 \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tDemonstrations against ethnic minorities such as the Rroma are always also an \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\texpression of the ambivalent policies and public opinion towards minority \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tgroups. Under the header of \u201cpoverty immigrants\u201d, the press repeatedly stated \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthat uneducated Rroma would supposedly migrate en masse into the German social \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tsecurity system, would not want to integrate and would create social tensions. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThat Rroma were made to an instrument for political debates on migration has \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\trarely been explicitly addressed. Beyond the problematic and political notion \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tof the \u201cRroma question\u201d, there is the reality that gets far too little \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tattention: For generations, 110,000 to 130,000 Rroma have been living in \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tGermany in an integrated fashion. They work, pay taxes, and contribute to \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tpublic prosperity. Among the immigrants there are many well-trained, highly skilled \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tworkers, who are rarely mentioned in the one-sided discussion. Among immigrants \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfrom Romania and Bulgaria, there are not only Rroma, but also ethnic Romanians, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBulgarians and members of other ethnic groups. Conspicuous immigrants are not seldom \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tsimply made to be Rroma \u200b\u200bbecause of prejudices. The right-wing nationalist \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tprotesters, who rebel against foreign immigration, deny all this. The Rroma are \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tnot social parasites, but people like you and me. Rroma are not an underclass, \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tbut belong to all social classes. Most of them want to integrate many already \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\thave, but are not perceived as Rroma.<\/p>\n
